Description
This salinity refractometer shows the concentration of salt in water with 2 to 3 drops of a sample. Monitoring the salinity of your reef aquarium is important to maintain a saltwater aquarium.
There are two ways to define the strength of saltwater. Salinity in parts per thousand (ppt), and specific gravity which is the density of seawater in ratio to pure water. This refractometer measures both.
Seawater has a salinity that measures about 35 ppt, or a specific gravity around 1.026. Pure water has a specific gravity of 1.00, but when salts are added to it, the specific gravity increases.
2 to 3 drops of liquid are placed on the prism. The clear lid is closed, creating a thin layer of water across the prism. The prism refracts light into a useful measure that is reflected in the eyepiece of the refractometer.
A refractometer is an accurate way to measure salinity. Refractometers have automatic temperature compensation (ATC) so no particular water temperature is required.
